Health is capital. Not theoretically. Practically. Appreciation can only occur after stability has been achieved. A system that is unstable will not compound. A system under continuous threat will not invest. A body preparing for survival will not allocate resources towards growth. That is why safety precedes leverage. It is why regulation results in a return. It is why stability is far more important than optimization. Without stability, effort is used merely to keep things in balance. No gain is realized. With stability, the effect of small inputs begins to be realized. Recovery is completed. Signals are integrated. Capacity is expanded. This is the first requirement for appreciation.

Most people have been taught to think about health the wrong way. Health is treated as a cost — something to manage, minimize, insure against, or postpone dealing with until something breaks. In that framing, wellness becomes episodic: a class here, a program there, a burst of effort followed by drift. Even the most well-intentioned people end up cycling between urgency and neglect. That framing error quietly determines everything that follows. Because if health is a cost, the goal becomes spending as little as possible — of time, attention, money, and effort. And costs, by definition, are something we try to reduce.

Leverage is the key to increasing an asset's value. It is the difference between working hard or smart. Working hard will always be expensive, while working smart will allow your capacity to grow while decreasing costs. This is just as relevant to the body as it is to any other asset. In most movement and fitness settings, effort is treated as leverage. A person will perform more reps, at higher intensities or with greater focus. While sometimes these strategies work well in the short term, they do not compound in their effectiveness; instead, they produce immediate outputs and plateau with a lot of wear and tear.

In almost all fitness and wellness environments, the body is viewed as either a problem to resolve or a mechanical device to sustain. Movement is typically seen as an obligation, a target to attain, or a justification for expenditure. In those models, the body serves as a cost center — reactive management occurs when some form of breakdown has occurred.
